Description

The Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program at Stanford University, Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, is accepting applications for the 2024-2025 academic year.

Program Description

The Stanford Transplant Nephrology Fellowship Program is accredited by the American Society of Transplantation (AST) and offers one year of advanced clinical training with an optional 2nd year dedicated to research training.

Stanford performs over 150 deceased and living donor kidney transplants a year and is one of very few programs in the nation with a Tolerance Induction Protocol. We perform multiorgan transplants and work closely with our thoracic and abdominal solid organ transplant programs. Stanford boasts of a collegial multidisciplinary team who work together to manage all aspects of pre and post-transplant care.

Situated in the beautiful Bay Area, fellows have time to explore during their training. Housing stipends are provided to help offset costs of living and fellows have access to $2000/academic year to attend regional and national conferences. The program provides fellows textbooks to advance their learning in transplantation and immunology.

During the one-year clinical program, six months are spent on the active kidney transplant inpatient service.  Fellows also spend time in outpatient transplant clinics throughout the academic year where they will learn to evaluate candidates for kidney transplant, living donors and manage post kidney transplant recipients. Transplant fellows perform outpatient kidney transplant biopsies under supervision of faculty and review slides/results with pathology, generally the following business day. Fellows attend the Stanford Histocompatibility Laboratory Course and have opportunities to pursue transplant electives and scholarly work during their 1-year of training. The optional 2nd year of training is available for those who wish to pursue additional research experience under the support of a faculty mentor. The environment for research in transplantation at Stanford is rich in history, experience and opportunity, from basic transplant immunology to translational clinical investigation.

Fellows will receive formal didactics with a monthly core curriculum that covers the AST recommend topics and will gain firsthand expertise in all AST required competencies. Fellows also attend and participate in transplant educational conferences, including Journal club, Morbidity and Mortality conference, Patient Care conferences, and Biopsy Conferences. Transplant fellows also attend conferences held by the Division of Nephrology and the Department of Medicine such as Nephrology Grand Rounds, Nephrology Research Conference, and Medicine Grand Rounds.

Graduates of our program are well prepared for independent practice and are successful in securing jobs at top academic institutions in the nation. A number of our graduates have gone on to become transplant Kidney-Pancreas Transplant Medical Directors at their institutions.

We accept applications from J-1 and H-1B visa holders. To apply, kindly visit our website https://med.stanford.edu/nephrology/education/fellowship/transplantfellowship.html. If you have questions, you may email the transplant nephrology fellowship coordinator, Lynn Clinton (azzo@stanford.edu) and program director, Adetokunbo Odunaiya (aodunaiya@stanford.edu):
