Description
Atrium Health's HLA/Flow Laboratory is seeking a Histocompatibility Technologist to help improve patient health for the Kidney, Pancreas, and Heart transplant program along with our Flow Cytometry program. ABHI-registered histocompatibility technologist is preferred but not required.
This job would perform and supervise routine, complex, and special laboratory procedures in Atrium's Southeast Charlotte Core Laboratory.
The technologist should be able to recognize unusual results and difficulties while performing, supervising, or implementing procedures and makes required corrections, teach others the performance of routine and special procedures, monitor for quality, efficiency, and safety in the performance of technical functions and for the proper handling of specimens, supplies and equipment.
This is a first shift position: Detailed Shift and Schedule: 5:00AM - 3:30PM (Wednesday - Saturday) - 4 10-hr shifts.
ON-CALL REQUIREMENT FOR THIS ROLE (rotating on-call shift with most of the team) - limited to unstaffed hours.
Other duties include:
- Updates procedures in the section policy and procedure manuals.
- Assesses the urgency of a test and uses this assessment to prioritize the workload.
- Analyzes test results for critical values and immediately reports and documents.
- Prepares specimens for testing, verifies patient identification on samples and requests before testing, and applies rules of specimen rejection and arranges for recollection.
- Uses and maintains equipment and instruments used in test performance and in work area. Performs minor troubleshooting.
- Prepares reagents for test performance.
- Calculates, reports, and records test results with accuracy.

- Have extensive computer skills in Microsoft Office applications (Word and Excel in particular).

- Ability to maintain on call flexibility to control abnormal conditions.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Willingly perform all other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Works in a busy environment around physicians, technologists, and other hospital teammates. Works in an area which contains biohazardous (infectious) materials along with chemical, fire, and mechanical hazards. May be required to stoop, reach and lift light (20 pound) to moderately heavy (50 pound) loads.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, CERTIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree in life sciences required. Master’s degree, ASCP or ABHI Registered Technologist preferred.

MACHINE, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:
Responsible for the safe operation of all equipment, including analyzers, computers and safety equipment. Responsible to ensure that daily and shift TPM is completed as required, as well as ensuring that monthly and annual TPM is completed as required.
